Flute Description

Ed Russel is the versatile flute player in Nevah. He has played different instruments with Nevah for over 10 years . We felt it was time to define the flute to all you bluegrass, newgrass and prograssabilly fans. It is not often you here a flute in this type of music so here goes the introductory definition for our fans.

Flute
a normally silver-plated (or in more extravagant cases, gold), narrow-bored instrument, held horizontally just under the mouth, and activated by blowing air across an aperture at one end of the instrument. Its higher-pitched cousin, the piccolo, is often encountered, although the lower alto flute rather less so. Early forebears include the unkeyed fife. The most popular close relation is the recorder family, largely unkeyed and end-blown in the vertical position.

Hope this helps put the question "What is a traditional bluegrass instrument " to rest.

NEVAH Wanted Poster - Updated!

We've updated our NEVAH Wanted Men Poster with our newest band member … Dick Knipping - Drummer at large!

Nevah's Newest Band Member

Meet Nevah's newest band member - Dick Knipping …

Dick Knipping - Another longterm Winterport resident, originally from New Jersey, who got his start beating on his mother's pots and pans with a wooden spoon until the age of six when he got his kiddie drum set. On his eighth birthday he got his first full size drum kit and started taking lessons. As a freshman in high school he got his first gig playing locally which led to his joining a Philly band "Central Park" who was managed by the prestigious Rothbard Agency. He played society gigs and years of shows with comedians and singers up and down the east coast. Dick came to Maine in 1970 and met Mark "the Bird" Swan and started playing with the band One Last Swing. In 1984 he met Phil Pitula and joined the Amazing Hot Wax Band which later became Rockin James. This group of musicians years later became the "Sista Sadie Band" and Dick splits his time with them and NEVAH. Over the years Dick has played with local notables Mark Miller, Bill Chinook, Blind Albert, Derrick Semler, Big Daddy and the Accelerators, Don Brewer Blues Project, Bad Daddys, Dave Wooley, and Sweet Northern Blues.

Slant 6 A Portland Maine Bluegrass Band

Nevah hopes that all their friends have an opportunity to hear this skilled traditional bluegrass band out of the Portland Maine area.

"Slant 6 is a four piece bluegrass band with Matt Shipman mandolin, Read McNamara on banjo, Mike Arciero on guitar and Amanda Kowalski on bass. Although Slant 6 Bluegrass is a relatively new band, each musician involved bring years of experience and a love for that old bluegrass sound with a young new energy. Knowing each other from being friends in the Portland, ME area music scene, the band formed in the winter of 2006 simply out of a desire to play some good quality bluegrass together. With some members more recently coming from different musical backgrounds ranging from gypsy jazz to folk the band had a desire to get back to the roots of what they really loved, bluegrass. From traditional songs and tunes to driving trad sounding originals and solid vocals, the band plays with an infectious energy that audiences love. The band really enjoys playing music together and it shows through the energy and how much fun they and the audience have. They are all accomplished musicians, contest winners and teachers on their own and it brings an exciting new level to the music.  Most of all they have a good time pickin’ and singin’ together! Here’s more about the band’s members"

Tricky Britches Portland Maine Bluegrass

Tricky Britches is a Portland based bluegrass band that Nevah has longed to perform with. These young kids have taken  Portland by storm much the way Nevah has been taking New England by storm. Nevah wish the best to this versatile band and  hope to perform with them soon.

"Tricky Britches is a high-energy string band hailing from Portland, Maine. From their roots of playing heel-stomping old-time fiddle tunes they have progressed into a fusion of classic bluegrass, country, and folk rock. The band consists of Tyler Lienhardt on Fiddle, Seth Doyle on Mandolin, Jed Bresette on Bass, Ryan “Bear” Wilkinson on Banjo, and Nick Wallace on Guitar.

The story of the band begins in the spring of 2009. Seth, Tyler and Nick, three long-time friends from Gorham, Maine, sought to turn back-porch jam sessions and local street corner busking into a means of traveling the country. They spent a sleepless night recording a homemade album of Old-Time tunes, and when it came time to stamp a name on the CD, Tricky Britches was born.
The weekend before the boys set out, they happened to be jamming in their usual spot on the cobblestones of Portland’s Wharf Street. By chance, Seth’s roommate, Jed Bresette, stopped by with his banjo and jumped in. They played a handful of standards together, and marveled at this new sound. The instruments blended into one oncoming machine, and their harmonies echoed down the red brick walls of the Old Port. All the old fiddle tunes, country songs, and bluegrass melodies took on a life of their own, and before they knew it, an eager crowd had gathered round.
Two days later, Jed quit his job painting houses, and the four of them hit the road the next morning.
Since then, Tricky Britches has recorded a new 12 track EP, Hop on a Train, at Portland’s own Acadia Recording Company. In the summer of 2010 the boys successfully toured thirteen countries in Europe, over the course of three and a half months. From Norwegian mountains all the way to Croatian beaches, crowds gathered round, danced, and hooted to the old-timey tunes and songs. Their second album, Hard Fought Day, was released in the spring of 2011, full of original songs, and featuring the band’s newest member, ”Bear” Wilkinson, singing and playing tenor banjo."

Coos Brothers Band

Well, after reading the promo below, Nevah Band felt a close kinship to the Coos Brothers. They are a 3 piece band that does unique arrangements of different bands in unforgettable arrangements. Like Nevah they are a home grown Maine band and play throughout the state. As the years go by I am sure Nevah will have the opportunity to hear and maybe perform with The Coos Brothers

Quote from
http://www.cooscanyon.com

"Coos Canyon is a singing trio from the Portland, ME area performing together for almost seven years now with power drive harmonies and the ability to sing your favorites like few bands can today...

The band takes its name from the amazing rock gorge located in the western mountains of the Longfellow Range carved out over thousands of years by the Swift River that eventually finds its way to merge with the mighty Androscoggin River.  It was the boyhood swimming hole of the band's leader and its majesty and strength remind him of powerful sound his band produces...they are fresh, natural, fun, and free flowing like the river...like thunder from the mountains, here comes Coos Canyon.

All members were born and raised in Maine, but to hear them, you'd swear they must come from "the city". It's simply 3 guys, 3 guitars, and should the boys need to "kick it up a notch", they call in a little back up from today's technology.  From a sweet acoustic James Taylor ballad to The Eagles, the 1976 Thin Lizzy hit "The Boys are Back in Town" to Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way, Johnny Cash hit "Folsom Prison Blues" to Kenny Chesney's "Summertime", the 60s Tommy James and the Shondell's hit "Draggin the Line" to 80's Stray Cats hit "Jump, Jive, Wail", the boys of Coos Canyon deliver the BEST of the 60's to now...

We look forward to see you at a Coos Canyon Concert near you...

Corona Brothers Band

The Corona Brothers are a Maine band that has been around the Maine Music scene for the past 14 years. The Nevah Band has nevah had the opportunity to see the Corona Brothers perform but hope to share a stage with them some time before Jimi Buffet finds that he is not the only beach bum band.

quote from Corona Brothers Promo Material:
"The heart of the Corona Brothers is the duo ''Rog & Ray," two souls who have taken it upon themselves to keep the short New England summers alive by putting together a band that breathes warm summer breezes into our Arctic freezes. The 5 piece band has been entertaining audiences for 14 years with their blend of Buffett and Belafonte and both Caribbean and Californian beach music, and rock & roll. The line-up also includes some of Maine’s finest musicians. Ben Ray Jones on guitar and flute, Don Emery on bass and Ron Bouffard on drums. Ray plays conga, guitar, flute, and a number of percussive instruments that he has collected over the years. Rog plays both electric and acoustic guitar as well as keyboards. The stage is adorned with pink flamingoes, palm trees, and all type of decorations that makes one feel as if one should be ordering daiquiris and making sure that one’s supply of sun tan lotion is well stocked."

Maine Alternative Music

There are all kinds of alternative music, Rock alternative, Country alternative and yes, Bluegrass alternative. The state of Maine has a reputation for doing things their own way, and that includes the musicians of the State. Nevah is a very unique band that does not fit into any boxes when it come to style of music, yet one could call them an alternative Country Bluegrass Swing Band.

Nevah, a Bangor Maine Band, has a set list that covers all genres of music and their musicianship allows them to play most any style. Their six (6) part harmonies can be haunting and sweet or powerful and gruff, and when you add the Pedal Steel, Flute and Sax it makes for an interesting alternative band that will blow you away from one song to the next.

The next time you are out, looking for a cutting edge alternative band that will keep you singing and dancing to a new beat, check out Nevah the eight (8) piece band that changes the meaning of alternative music.
